Introduction to President of Jury:MANFRED WAGNER-ARTZT

Born in Vienna, Manfred Wagner-Artzt was admitted to study at the former “Academy of Music and performing Art” in Vienna in the class of Richard Hauser at the age of 13. Four years later he continued his education with the renowned pianist Alexander Jenner and obtained his concert pianist diploma in 1974. Only a few months later he gained a second diploma, by finishing his studies of chamber music. He is renowned as a soloist, a chamber musician and a Lied-accompanist, promoted by Erik Werba.

He won the gold medal at the International Piano Competition in Vercelli. Since then he has toured extensively in many European countries, in the United States, in Russia, in Japan, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, and in in the Near and Middle East.

His artistic activities are documented in many recordings for international radio and TV stations, as well as on records and CDs, recorded for companies as EMI, GRAMOLA, MDG, KKM, DIVERTIMENTO, etc.

A significant part of his concert-activities involve collaborations with some of the most famous instrumentalists performing today e.g. with the members of the Alban Berg Quartet, of the Vienna String-Sextet, of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, with the Aron Quartet, Heinrich Schiff, Christian Altenburger, Ernst Kovacic, etc.


In the “ARSIO PIANO DUO”, he dedicates his interest, together with his wife, the young pianist SUSANNA ARTZT, to the wonderful repertoire of piano music for Four Hands and Piano Duet.

As a member of the “exxj”(Ensemble 20th Century) between 1975 and 2010 he has been involved in many developments in contemporary music.

He has given master-classes and lecture-recitals at the famous Moscow Tchaikovsky-Conservatory (regularly), in the USA, in Austria and other European countries and has been assistant professor at the European Academy in Montepulciano.

He has been a member of the jury of the Int. Competition of the University of Maryland and last but not least he has worked as an editor for “Universal Edition” where he prepared the new edition of the “Mouvement for Piano-Quartet” by Gustav Mahler and recently the never before released piano music by Franz Schreker.

Since december 2006 he has been vice-president of the International Chopin Society in Vienna.

Since October 1975 he has been teaching as a professor at the University of Music in Vienna where he has been nominated in 1999 as “Ordinarius” for piano, which is comparable to the “tenure professor” in the United States.

In 1997 Manfred Wagner-Artzt has been honored for his merits in the improvement of the cultural relationship between Austria and Poland as the President of the Republic of Poland awarded him the "Cross of Cavalier".
